Election Year

© 2020 Jeff Jackson

All the signs are in the yards

Looks like this year’s

gonna be hard

Everybody’s drawing their lines

Forgetting what’s it’s like to be kind

Oh, here we go now

Oh, months will go by slow now

All the ads are on TV

Guess slander isn’t what it’s supposed to be

Comes around every four years

With a wake of anger and

even more tears

Oh, hold on tight now

Oh, it’s time to fight now

Which campaign

will trump the other one?

Which old guy

will abide in Washington?

It’s an election year

Election year

Issues these debates

aren’t answering

Someone pass the jar of aspirin

Keyboard courage

starting to bloom

Faceless fights

may just well spell our doom

Oh, it’s getting old now

Oh, a civil cold war now

What’s it all for,

can you remember?

No one talk to me

‘til after November

In an election year

Election year

Funny that we call ourselves

 the “United” States

When the only thing we share is united hate

In an election year

Election year

Oh, it’s getting old now

Oh, a civil cold war now
