Life on Hold

© 2017 Jeff Jackson

When did we become ghosts?

Seconds after their toast?

Praises lodged in their throats?

Cancer undiagnosed

When did they say goodbye?

Staring up at the sky

While we looked in their eyes

They looked past us and cried

Time will make us old

As we fall between folds

Of our bed sheet souls with our

Life on hold

Our life on hold

We believe in the sun

Even when it won’t shine

We believed in your love

Even when you weren’t kind

We believe in the Lord

Even when there’s silence

We believe in a peace

Even in this violence

Will we be paroled

While our story’s told

Of our buried gold and our

Life on hold

Our life on hold

Rake the mud this way and that

It’ll still be mud

While we sit here and brood

We could light the fuse of our blood

When it all unfolds

Pushed to our thresholds

We release control of our

Life on hold

Our life on hold
