Dragonspell

© 2016 Jeff Jackson

I’m just a humble woodsman

No adventure do I crave

But I’m staring at this dragon

At the mouth of its cave

I know my knees are knocking

But I’m trying to stay brave

In a moment or less it’ll make

Its belly my grave

I need some kind of magic sword

I need some kind of shield

I need some kind of magic words

I need some kind of forcefield

Now the dragon’s coming toward me

Yet I’m standing my ground

Though the voices in my head

Are making high-pitched sounds

And the dragon keeps encircling

In tightly woven rounds

But the fear planted in me

Has me chained and bound

I need some kind of super strength

I need a skeleton key

I need some kind of trap door

I need some invisibility

Perhaps this awful dragon’s

Not a dragon after all

But a long enchanted princess

Held in a witch’s thrall

If I can find the courage

Gaze within enough to see

Unlock her from her prison

Set the captive princess free

Though I’m just a humble woodsman

Now I stand before a queen

And the mist that now surrounds her

Is a shade of yellow-green

And the terror once within me

Is a dark and twisted dream

Seems the dragons that we fight

Simply want to be seen

I need some kind of second sight

I need some kind of sixth sense

I need some kind of clairvoyance

I need to lay down my defense
