Columns of Rain

©2019 Jeff Jackson

All the fields lining Joe Barnes Street

Rows as far as your two eyes can see

Every seed that tries to breathe is a rosary bead

Felt a drop on my skin

Sky is darkening

Heralds for my chagrin

Storm’s about to begin

We pray for rain

Then we only complain

When it washes out

Our parade

We can’t explain

Why we’re crying in pain

Asking why in God’s name

We ever prayed

Why we ever prayed

For columns of rain

Columns of rain

All the leaves from the crepe myrtle trees

Falling whichever way they please

Spinning spirals down through the breeze

Like a grown man’s sneeze

There was an eyelash moon

In the sky of mid-June

Floating like a balloon...

Now I pray it’ll come back soon

Puddles turn to floods

Bubbles in my blood

Ground is nothing but mud

Drowning everything I love

I asked for too many

Blessings from above

We pray for rain

Then we only complain

Asking why in God’s name

We ever prayed

Why we ever prayed

For columns of rain

Columns of rain
