Candles

I lit a thousand candles
Placed them neatly on the mantle
Each one was a dream I had about you.
A stroll through a graveyard
Notes scrolled on a prayer card
The deep-buried treasure I had to pursue.
Conversations over ice cream
Each led to a daydream
I was tap-dancing in my tennis shoes
Each moment was a flicker
Heartbeat getting quicker
Light of the candle only grew
And each flame blew out
And I’m now without
I lit a hundred candles
Placed them neatly on the mantle
Each one was a dream I had about you.
The crisp mountain air
It was almost unfair
How all of the signs seemed to point me to you.
You had such a history
Enveloped in such mystery
Everything was working until out of the blue
I got your letter
You found someone better
I was the detective without any clue
I lit a few candles
Placed them neatly on the mantle
Each one was a dream I had about you.
The charred inner bricks
The stained glass crucifix
The columns of light shining through
Here’s a bell that won’t ring
Here’s a heart that won’t sing
The dream that was real but never came true
I lit just one candle
Placed it neatly on the mantle
It was a dream I had about you…
